Formal Lab Reports & Scientific Writing

Scientific writing is a critical aspect in doing science.  There is no point in doing something if no one knows what you did.  Writing about your research, sharing it, and presenting it are essential aspects to the research process.  Communication with other people is an essential life skill. Please use the resources on this site to develop your scientific writing skills. Keep in mind that different areas of science (i.e., biology, chemistry, physics) may have different conventions and different scientific journals have different formats -- therefore remember that expectations change based on different environments.

All Science is formed necessarily of three things:
the series of facts which constitute the science;
the ideas which they call forth;
the words which express them.

- Antoine Lavoisier (1743-94)

The document below provides an quick guide on how to write a formal lab report. Use this and the detailed resources on the left to help you compose your lab report. In my opinion, looking at examples (found on the left) can greatly help.
