Organic Chemistry

This Organic Chemistry elective course is a project based course giving students research experience in synthetic organic chemistry. Students investigate the design and synthesis of small organic molecules that have the potential to bind tightly and selectively to biologically significant proteins. Students are introduced to multidisciplinary research through active learning, written assignments and activities, and guided laboratory experimentation to foster digital literacy and technical competency relevant to the field of drug discovery.

Topics include, but not limited to the following:

        • Introduction to Drug Discovery

        • Proteins, Receptors & Ligand Interactions

        • Basic Principles of Drug Design

        • Exploring Research Databases & Software

        • Compound Purification (Recrystallization, Distillation, and Column Chromatography)

        • Compound Characterization and Spectroscopy (Melting Point, NMR, IR, Mass Spec)

        • Ligand Synthesis
