Electron Affinity is the energy change for the process of adding an electron to a gaseous atom to form an anion (negative ion).

X(g) + e−  ⟶  X−(g)  


You can add an electron to whatever element you want, but typically we usually talk about electron affinity with non-metals because those are the ones that usually gain electrons. Example: O ⟶ O2-
